Solarize Windham County!
Home Energy Advocates is partnering with local solar contractors to bring low-cost solar electric and hot water systems to residents and businesses in Windham County. The process is called 'Solarize' and works through a bulk purchase type of arrangement. With Solarize a town signs up to participate and when over 50 kiloWatts of solar energy are installed in that town (roughly 10 households*) the price for each system drops from an already super-low price even lower. It drops further at 100 kW installed, and 150 kW, and if a town has 250 kW installed during the Solarize period then RGS Energy and Home Energy Advocates will donate a solar PV system to be installed on a public school or municipal building.

* the average solar PV system installed on a home in Vermont to cover most of its electricity needs is 5 kW, or about 20 panels.
** Federal incentives currently cover over 30% of the cost of a solar system, but we are not tax consultants so check with an accountant for details. The Vermont incentive ended on Dec. 31, 2014 but the federal incentive has been extended until 2021.

Europe's Transition to a Renewable Energy Economy

Europe uses half the energy used in America, per person, and is going through a rapid transition to renewable energy. Home Energy Advocates hosted a forum on Germany's impressive advances in new energy: from 3% to ~30% renewable power in 12 years while creating 800,000 jobs! Then we organized presentations by two energy experts from Europe -- Dr. Andreas Wieg from the German Cooperative Association based in Berlin and Dirk Vansintjan from the Ecopower Cooperative in Belgium, which has 30,000+ members. These events were truly inspiring. Tad Montgomery accompanied the experts through Western New England, including the New Hampshire and Vermont statehouses where presentations were made to respective House & Senate Energy Committees. Home Energy Advocates sponsored their talk in Brattleboro at the School for International Training. We are inspired by the European renewable energy transition, and H.E.A. is working with others to bring the incredible advances they have made here to our region to help Vermont to become energy independent and carbon neutral. Stay tuned.
